First Impressions
My husband is Fijian and I am Caucasian, so our 4 daughters have mixed hair and 4 different hair types. We have been searching for products that actually work to tame and nourish their wild curls. We have bought and discarded many options over the years.
I was very happy to find the shampoo and conditioner bars from Bubbles and Balms, which are ethically sourced, allergen friendly, and eliminate the need for plastic bottles.
They arrived beautifully packaged with the bars nestled in compostable recycled paper shavings. The scent of the orange and coconut shampoo bar, reminiscent of a creamsicle, mingling with the floral notes of the rosehip and lavender was very pleasing.
Solid Bars are Great for Air Travel
We were very excited to take these products in our carry-on luggage on our trip to Fiji with our girls. It was stress free packing, knowing that we cut down on the number of liquids we were bringing, and we were happy not to add plastic waste to the environment.

Deodorant
Being responsible for the health and hormonal wellbeing of four growing daughters is a challenge in our current market of commercially produced beauty and hygiene products with their allergen and cancer causing and hormone disrupting additives.
What a relief to find Bubbles and Balms vegan and plant-based deodorant formula. Their natural deodorant is made with organic and fair trade shea butter, zinc oxide and kaolin clay to reduce moisture and bacteria causing BO, and without baking soda, They are in a fully compostable paper tube for guilt free disposal.
They have 4 different amazing scents: “By the Bay,” “Coconut LAvender,” “Pink Lemonade,” and “Vanilla Mint.”
1 application = 24 hour odour protection for most users!
One Drawback:
When we first tried the deodorant, it was in the middle of winter, and it was quite rough on the underarm. Their website suggests holding it in the armpit for a bit to warm it up before applying. When we brought them to Fiji, it was a much smoother application, as long as we weren’t staying in air conditioning,
Shampoo and Conditioner Bars
Orange and Coconut
“Lighten up any day with this luscious zero-waste shampoo bar for cleansing balanced and combination scalp roots. Free from sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrance, synthetic preservatives, gluten, and phthalates, this cruelty-free bar is the perfect fit for homes with multiple sensitivities.”
Charcoal Bar
“pH balanced with gentle cleaners for irritated and itchy scalps. Activated charcoal assists in cleansing roots and scalp of excess oils. Organix tea tree helps to remove loose flakes and reduce itch from dandruff.”
One drawback

All the shampoo bars claim to provide 60-90 washes with each bar. We tried to keep track of how many people were washing with them, I am sure we missed some of the washes since the kids were using them as well, but we did not make it to 60 washes. It was closer to 50, but we do have a lot of hair at our house.
The shampoo and conditioner bars have to be stored in the correct way after getting them wet, so we used mesh bags that we found on amazon to hang the bars for easier soaping action and drying. Another option is a bamboo soap dish with slots for the water to fall through, or a shampoo bar storage rack.

Sustainability and Giving Back
In 2020, Bubbles and Balms launched their first paperboard jars. They are made with post consumer content and a vegetable wax liner, so they are compostable and paper recyclable. You can cut them apart and place them in your recycling or add them to your compost bins.
The couple invests 5% of each sale into an affordable housing fund to help local families on their own Better Each Day journey.
